our neighbors emerge from their homes
to drag their garbage cans to the street
and the holiday season feels passed
the pleasant cycle of holidays
in the year’s final calendar quarter,
followed by bleak winter working
when the sky grows hazy white,
but the sun never piercing
and someone at the time clock
reminding us smugly to punch-in
