“We’re not real alcoholics,” Max said. “Real drunks will drink themselves until they can’t stand up and then muster the strength only to stand up enough to drink even more.”

I lifted my beer, leaving a ring of condensation.

“I understand,” Cynthia replied, “but I do drink every day and I do find it difficult to go more than a day without drinking.”

I placed the beer down in a clear spot.

“Yeah, it’s difficult because you’re dependent on drinking, but that’s not the same as being a drunk.”
